HOW TO SEARCH THE PHOTO ARCHIVE

Before beginning a search session, you must read and accept the Terms and Conditions noted below. This defines your rights and responsibilities as well as protecting the owners of the copyrighted material on the website.

Please read and agree to the Terms & Conditions

Before downloading files or to order copies of photographs from this Web site, you must first read the following photographic reproduction policy that defines copyright, fair use, personal use, and commercial use. Your acceptance of our photographs in any medium constitutes the acknowledgement, understanding, and acceptance of the terms and conditions of use outlined below. All users assume full responsibility for any infringement of copyright and publication rights of reproduced materials.

Terms and Conditions
With appropriate permission, the Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI) is happy to provide reasonably priced reproductions of our photographs for personal or commercial use. The income from these lab fees and use fees helps to support our ongoing efforts to preserve and make accessible these primary source documents of regional history.

Copyright
Copyright protection is provided by laws of the United States and other countries to the creators of "original works of authorship" including literary, dramatic, artistic, musical, and certain other intellectual works. This Web site is such a work and is protected by copyright law. United States Copyright Law (Title 17, U.S.C.) restricts unauthorized use of copyrighted material; potential users must obtain permission from the copyright holder.

The nature of historical archival photograph collections means that copyright or other information about restrictions may be difficult or even impossible to determine. Please contact photos@seattlehistory.org if you have additional information or questions regarding the images found in this web site.

Fair Use
The doctrine of fair use allows limited use of copyrighted material without permission from the copyright holder. Fair use includes comment, criticism, teaching, and private scholarship. We welcome fair use of our Web site and its contents. All other uses require written permission. Please contact photos@seattlehistory.org for more information.

Personal Use
Personal use requires written permission from the owner (MOHAI), and includes reference, research, and any other use, provided all such uses are limited to private, non-commercial use.

Commercial Use
Commercial use requires written permission from the owner (MOHAI), and includes but is not limited to electronic or paper publishing, video production, exhibits, product presentations, interior design, advertising, or similar commercial purposes.

All users assume full responsibility for any infringement of copyright and publication rights of reproduced materials.

I have read and understand the rights and permissions requirements outlined above, and by entering this portion of the Web site, agree to them.

BASIC SEARCH TIPS

Search terms are not case-sensitive

To search for a certain date, enter the year only. By default, the results will display a 10-year span around the date requested (plus and minus 5 years)

If you include more than one word, the default search mode will retrieve items that contain all of your search keywords.

Use quotation marks around your search terms when you want your search results to contain the exact phrase as you entered it.

Use an asterisk (*) as a wild card at the end of a word or string of letters to broaden your search results. For example, row* would bring up images of rowboats, rowers, and rowing

To view a larger version of an image and the information about it, click on the thumbnail image.
