Now & Then Photo Quest
This October, join MOHAI in remembering the Seattle and King County as they used to be, while documenting them as they are now.
Every day, MOHAI will post a photo from our collection of over 3 million photos, and challenge you to capture a modern-day view of that same photo. Think if it as following in Paul Dorpat's footsteps, cause, well, you are.
If you have any questions about the contest, send your email to social.media@seattlehistory.org.
How to Participate
- Each photo on the Flickr Group will be accompanied by a brief hint as to the location of the photo. The photo and the hint will be listed by date on the Flickr Group's discussion board. Hints might include, but are not limited to the following:
- GPS Coordinates.
- Allusions to the current buildings or intersection.
- Historical clues.
- To participate, simply find where the original photo was taken and trek out to take a modern-day version of the photo yourself.
- We will not accept screenshots from Google Maps Street View or similar online mapping services.
Guidelines for Photo Submission
- You may submit entries to any day’s photo, any time up until November 5th at 5:00p.m. Any photos posted to the group after this time will be removed and will not be eligible to prizes.
- When you have a current view of a MOHAI photo, simply upload it to your Flickr account. Make sure the photo is captioned with the date of the matching "Then" photo. (Example: If, on October 1st MOHAI releases a photo of the Space Needle taken in 1962, caption your present-day photo submission, "October 1st. The caption is relevant only to the date MOHAI released the Photo of the Day, no the date of the original photo or the date you took or submitted the photo.)
- Join the Now & Then Photo Quest Flickr Group. While there, click the "Add Photos" button (next to the search field) and choose your photo from your Flickr collection.
- MOHAI encourages submissions to have a geographic location embedded in the metadata. If this sentence made no sense to you, feel free to ignore it.
- You've submitted your photo to the Now & Then Photo Quest!
- Please Note:
- By submitting a photo or photos, you agree that you hold the rights to the photo(s) submitted and are entitled to share the photo(s).
- Submitted photos must be submitted to the Flickr Group for this Quest. MOHAI will not accept photos emailed to the museum, placed on our Facebook Page, or sent to us via Twitter.
- MOHAI reserves the right to delete a photo from the Flickr Group due to, but not limited to: Nudity, obscenity, or hateful language or communication. MOHAI staff will make the final decision.
- Failure to comply with these guidelines may result in removal of your submitted photos from the Flickr Group.
