MOHAI offers year-round professional development programs for K-12 teachers at the museum or your school. Credits or clock hours are available for most programs.

The Civil War in Washington Territory

As part of the WSCSS Lake Chelan Leadership Retreat, MOHAI will be presenting a session on The Civil War in Washington Territory. MOHAI’s Public Historian Dr. Lorraine McConaghy, will present content on the situation in Washington Territory in the antebellum, wartime and reconstruction periods. The presentation will explore the issues of slavery, race, resignation, treason, secession, and suppression of civil liberties. MOHAI Educators Tara McCauley and Andy Clark will then share ideas for engaging students in the classroom using a variety Civil War primary sources (such as diary entries, letters and newspapers). In part three of this session, Patty Shelton, K – 12 Social Studies Curriculum Developer for the Bellevue School District will share take-away lesson plans and activities on this topic for teachers.
