Discovering Seattle Stories

Students are the storytellers using primary sources to explore Seattle’s past. Students are introduced to working with artifacts through observation in small groups. Artifacts are then shared with the class while telling a story of Seattle’s history.

Cracking the History Code

Students become code breakers by gathering evidence from primary sources to reveal the stories of the region’s past. Students work in teams to discover the meaning behind an artifact. Each team is given a locked box and artifact, during the program students collect information about their artifact, including supporting photographs and documents. Teams share their findings at the end of the session.

  • Grade Level: 3-5
  • Duration: 1 Hour

History? Fact vs. Fiction

Students must separate historical fact from fiction by examining primary sources to seek out the truth about why events happened in Seattle history. Students work in teams to analyze artifacts, documents, photographs and exhibits to determine if a historical statement is Fact or Fiction. Teams share gathered evidence and historical statements at the end of the activity.
