(Seattle) On Friday, November 6, the Museum of History & Industry (MOHAI) recognized 4th grade teacher Shannon Foster from Beacon Hill International School in Seattle as the 3rd Annual MOHAI Educator of the Year. Foster received her award at History Makers, MOHAI’s annual fundraising gala, held this year at the Naval Reserve Building (Armory), MOHAI’s future home.

Shannon Foster was chosen from a group of teachers nominated by principals throughout the region. A selection committee comprised of MOHAI board members looked at the development of original historical research projects, the creation of learning opportunities beyond the classroom and curriculum for training other teachers, and overall teaching skills.

Foster has been instrumental in integrating global perspectives into the curriculum at Beacon International, where 90% of the student population are immigrants or from immigrant families. She developed a “Country of Origin” project that has assisted students in understanding their background and in actively engaging in classroom learning. In the nomination, principal Dr. Susie Murphy wrote, “One particular strength is her ability to create a positive classroom climate in which students take responsibility for their own choices, are supported as they learn constructive ways to define and solve problems and develop compassion and empathy for their classmates.”

Foster was presented with a check for $1000 by MOHAI Co-President Maggie Walker at History Makers.
